We have come across couples who are arguing and found that our assistance was needed by women being threatened or physically pushed around by their boyfriends. Being able to intervene and enable the women to get to a mini cab safely has been greatly appreciated by these women and, aside from occasionally being at the receiving end of the boyfriend’s frustration, the situation has been diffused by separation.
There are a few people who we see quite regularly on the street, one such girl is simply glad of some safe company and conversation while she’s out. Building relationship with these people over time has a very positive effect on the team as it’s always good to be warmly greeted and immediately asked if we have any lollipops! People like the girl are often vulnerable when they are out because substance abuse leaves them less aware of the dangers around them.
The reaction from the staff of the various pubs and clubs has been really surprising. All the door staff are chatty and grateful for what we’re doing; seeing them on a regular basis means we have established a good rapport right the way down the High Street. One cold December night, the bar staff at one of the pubs invited us to come in and have a hot coffee from their machine, while they were cleaning up after closing. The fifteen minutes we spent with them was really encouraging, they were very appreciative but also quite intrigued by the whole concept of Street Angels. This has been quite typical of the response we get. They notice when we’re not around and are positive about having someone different to talk to every now and then!
